Scholarships

The Volunteer Guild is pleased to offer scholarships each year to support two specific groups:

  • The Bea Dunstone Scholarship was created to honour a woman with a rich history as a member of the Volunteer Guild. Mrs. Dunstone  began her volunteer work at the Victoria General Hospital in 1964 and spent over 40 wonderful years working with the Guild, predominantly as the manager of the gift shop. She also held various other positions in the Guild for several years. As a result of Bea’s dedicated service she was the recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for community service in 2003 and had a conference room and this scholarship named in her honour at the hospital.

This scholarship is specifically intended to assist Victoria Hospital support staff who have worked at the hospital for at least three years, who have a good work history, and are interested in furthering their healthcare education.

  • The Mattie Hanna Scholarship began as a way to honour Mrs. Matti Hanna who also had a long, and rich history with the Guild. She began her volunteering at the old hospital in Osborne Village where she worked in many different departments; she transferred to the new Pembina Highway location and became part of the Gift Shop team. She served for many year as the Secretary-Treasurer of the board, was always active in fundraising activities, and served on all committees of the board at one time or another. In 1977 she was awarded The Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal which commemorated the 25th anniversary of the ascension of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to the throne and was awarded to individuals who made outstanding and exemplary contributions to their communities or to Canada as a whole.

This scholarship is designed to support volunteers who are pursuing post-secondary studies in the field of healthcare.

Originally these scholarships were funded through donations made in the name of these special ladies. Additional income arrives when donations are made in memory of other volunteers, and through our investment income. However, you can donate to our scholarship program at any time through this link: Donate Here.
